For the second Instagram Curation, I’m focusing on Old Fashioneds. The Old Fashioned is a drink that often ends up in front of my camera, and in front of me, and therefore, the Kelly Peloza Photo Instagram. Before the photos, it’s only fitting to include a recipe with this post.
Mixology purists will tell you that a proper Old Fashioned will never include muddled fruit, and that this version with maraschino cherries and orange slices is an Old Fashioned that lost its way in the mid 20th century. A real Old Fashioned contains only bitters, liquor, sugar or simple syrup, and a squeeze of orange peel over ice. I enjoy both versions, and I’m often photographing an Old Fashioned in a mid 20th century context (such as this Mad Men shoot for the ), so I’ll give you the “new” Old Fashioned recipe.
Old Fashioned Recipe
Adapted from the AMC Cocktail Guide
Ingredients
2 dashes aromatic bitters
1 orange slice
1 maraschino cherry
½ tsp sugar
1 teaspoon water
1½ oz of rye
Crushed ice
Garnish:
1 cherry
1 orange slice
Instructions
- Combine the bitters, orange slice, cherry, sugar, and water in a lowball glass. Muddle to release the juices and oils of the fruit.
- Add the rye and ice. Stir.
- Garnish with an orange slice and cherry.

Even though #MadMen has been the subject of many posts on my food blog, I’m bad and now two episodes behind on season 7. Until I catch up, here’s one of my favorite images from the #PartyLikeAMadMan Virtual Dinner Party I participated in earlier this month. #foodstyling #foodphotography #dondraper #cocktails #whiskey #foodphotographer @benbellabooks A photo posted by Kelly Peloza Photo (@kellypelozaphoto) on
Now that we’ve established my favorites, what is your favorite cocktail (or mocktail) to drink or photograph?
