Since today is Valentine’s Day, and also the middle of winter, I’ve decided to share photos from Sophie and Jorie’s late summer wedding this past year. It was a beautiful, colorful day with the kind of warm weather that sounds like perfection on a cold February in Chicago. Their day took place at the Monona Terrace wedding venue in Madison, WI.
Monona Terrace Wedding
Sophie and Jorie came to me looking for a wedding photographer for their September wedding in Madison at Monona Terrace, a stunning Frank Lloyd Wright building with Lake Monona on one side and a view of the Capitol building on the other. I was excited about the beautiful venue with so many options for portraits, couple photos, and the outdoor ceremony on the lake.
Save for a 5 minute downpour, we had perfect weather throughout the day, with sheer layers of clouds acting as a softbox in the sky, naturally lighting everyone with a soft glow. It was a windy day, which made this veil shot possible, but also meant our team was chasing after stray veils during these portrait shoots!
Since we live in different states, the first time I met the wedding couple was on their wedding day. They were so sweet, laid back, and simply focused on enjoying their day while we were shooting photo and video throughout the day. I couldn’t have asked for better clients, or a better team to work with throughout the day! Andi and Betty of Seadog Creative were on video, and I was happy to have my friend Sarah Stankey join me as second shooter.
The flowers were still in bloom on the terrace, which overlooked the lake, alongside the brides in their fabulous, intricately-designed dresses.
Monona Terrace offered a view of the Capitol building, which made the perfect backdrop for the wedding party group photos, and family portraits.
The Ceremony
The rooftop terrace at Monona Terrace was also the location for the ceremony, where the venue staff lined up the rows of simple, elegant white chairs, and the florist affixed bright yellow sunflowers and white roses to the altar.
The Reception
The reception included a lovely dinner, and a dessert spread with every flavor of cupcake you could possibly imagine.
The wedding party led the Grand March, then Sophie and Jorie made their entrance onto the dance floor for first dances.
And the night ended with a dance party.
Congratulations, Sophie and Jorie! We wish you happiness for years to come.
